San Antonio, Zambales

Capones & Camara Islands From Afar!

I, together with my travel buddy (my youngest brother) happened to reach San Antonio, Zambales in Luzon, Philippines because of a planned island trip! We wanted to explore the famous Anawangin Cove and  hop both the Capones & Camara Islands that were situated in that same area. In order to get there, we had to pass San Antonio in Zambales because this was where the islands's two jump off points were located, the Pundaquit and San Miguel.

San Antonio is a municipality in the province of Zambales, Philippines. Politically subdivided into fourteen barangays which includes:
  • Angeles
  • Antipolo
  • Burgos (Pob.)
  • East Dirita
  • Luna (Pob.)
  • Pundaquit
  • Rizal (Pob.) (Sentro Pueblo)
  • San Esteban
  • San Gregorio (Pob.)
  • San Juan (Pob.) (Sitio Mabanban)
  • San Miguel

On Our Way To San Antonio, Zambales
    Via Victory Liner Bus
San Antonio, Zambales was formerly a hunting region where ethnic group of hunters from the Northern towns of Zambales would hunt, gather & stay to rest. The first Ilocano families from Paoay area of Ilocos Norte who arrived there were the first ones who founded the first settlement that grew into what is now the town.
The town was used to be the site of the U.S. Naval Base - best known as the United States Naval Communications Station San Miguel. After Mt. Pinatubo's eruption in 1991, the Americans decided to leave, abandoning their military bases which is now used for educational purposes of the Philippine Navy and merchant marine.

    Baguio City

Man-made Lake where anyone can go boating!

Baguio City is known as the Summer Capital of the Philippines, City of Pines, of Mines, of Flowers and the Ukay-Ukay (Second Hand) Capital.
When I first went there with some of my friends from the office, we just had a 2day/3night stay in a hotel near Session Road. We're there obviously for a job assignment, a roving campaign for a bank financial.  We didn't have much time to explore Baguio.  Just a few Burnham Park, Wright Park, Camp John Hay Park sightseeings and to the strawberry fields to pick & gather some strawberries. On the other hand, my second trip to Baguio was because of a 60-day band gig. That time, I was with the New Channelz. We had a straight 6-night gigs in a row at Alberto's (the premier bar in Baguio City) and a day-off in a week. It was exciting because I knew I would have enough time to roam around Baguio whenever I'm free from work.

    What I've Learned About Baguio?
Baguio is gifted with many attractions making it an interesting place and favorited not only by local but foreign tourists as well. Blessed with with pine trees, cold breezes, chilly cool climate, foggy hills, pleasant views, lovely flowers and friendly people, no wonder why it's been marked as the premiere tourist destination in the Northern part of the Philippines and an ideal place to escape from the tropical heat of the Philippine lowlands.  It has the most tourist spots compared to the other Philippine destinations. Most of them are located in the east and south sides, too few are located near the residences. Through the years, Baguio has morphed from what was once a grassy highland into one of the greenest, cleanest and urbanized cities in the country. Where To Stay
     Getting There

    By air:
Loakan Airport is the only airport serving the area of Baguio City. It is classified as a trunkline airport, or a major commercial domestic airport, by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, a body of the Department of Transportation and Communications that is responsible for the operations of not only this airport but also of all other airports in the Philippines except the major international airports. It is about 10 minutes by car from the city center going south. Due to the limited length of the runway, it is restricted to commuter size aircraft. The airport is used primarily by helicopters, turbo-prop and piston engine aircraft, although on rare occasion light business jets (LBJ) have flown into the airport.

    By Land:
The three main access roads leading to Baguio from the lowlands are Kennon Road, Aspiras-Palispis Highway (formerly Marcos Highway), and Naguilian Road, also known as Quirino Highway.
It takes about six hours to travel from Manila to Baguio City through Kennon Road. It is about fifteen to thirty minutes longer through the Aspiras-Palispis Highway, and could take three more hours if going up from Manila via Naguilian Road -- which is the usual route for travelers from the Northern areas of Luzon such as Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and northern La Union province.

Bus services that operate in Baguio include Philippine Rabbit, Dangwa Tranco, Dagupan Bus, Victory Liner, Partas, Genesis, Saulog Transit.

Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park (Part 1)

    Misamis Occidental by: Hope Olano

Sometime in 2009, I got tired with the busy life in Manila so I decided to go to Misamis Occidental to have a break, away from the stresses of urban life. Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park or MOAP was one of my itineraries , a tropical resort and a habitat for various marine mammals in Mindanao, Philippines. It is located in the boundaries of Tudela and Sinacaban municipalities of Misamis Occidental. It features a wildlife park that houses various kind of animals & a dolphin island where numerous type of dolphin species live. It has accommodations of hut-style cottages located along the line of the mangroves. Two restaurants are located within the park itself, one in the mainland and another one in the Dolphin Island.
    Exploring MOAP
Before entering MOAP, you have to pay Php10.00/Head as an entrance fee. Usually the security guard collects it.  After that, you can explore around the park & free to take pictures as much as you want.  If you want to take a look at the animals in the mini wild life inside, you will have to walk on the wooden planks supported with bamboos.
The main attraction of MOAP is the offshore man-made Dolphin Island. You need a 10 -15 minute  boat ride from the MOAP ferry port to get to the island.  The boat ride is Php130/Head.

On the island, you can actually experience the following:
    • Feeding the dolphins Php100.00/Kilo of fish
    • Kayaking Php100.00/Head
    • Scuba Diving Php1000/Head - Diving Suits for rent are available.
    • Snorkeling Php50.00/Head - Swimming with the dolphins.
    Entrance Fee  - only Php10.00/Head

    The Wildlife
The wildlife park houses various kind of animals mostly native to the Philippines. No entrance fee. Located inside MOAP.
    Getting to the Dolphin Island
To get there, you have to walk further to the mainland restaurant area where the ferry parks in order to ride the boat that'll take you to the Dolphin Island.

The Port's main restaurant caters fresh, yummy & very affordable sea foods. To get there, you need to walk half a kilometer (like what we did) on the wooden planks supported by those bamboo poles (sea water below you).

    The Ferry Boat!
    Php130.00/Head
    The Dolphin Island
This is where MOAP takes care of the rescued dolphins. The whole island's submerged under water. All structure are stilts to maintain them above sea level.

Water level in the island is shallow. You can even stand on some parts. Look closely at the picture, see the sudden sea water color changes - from light blue to dark blue (the sorrounding sea water must be very deep).
The restaurant located at the center of Dolphin Island.

    GETTING THERE
    VIA OZAMIS CITY
If you are planning to visit MOAP, I suggest you book in advance an accomodation prior to your flight to Ozamis City because there are no hotel or hostel accomodations in the nearby areas of Tudela & Sinacaban.  It would be more expensive if you're going to book an accomodation in MOAP specially when you're going alone. You can enjoy this kind of travel while spending less.
    • By Air - Book a flight (Cebu Pacific Air/Airphil/PAL) from Manila to Ozamis City Airport. (Travel Time is 1 hour.)
      • Via Ozamis - From the airport, ride a transport that'll take you to Ozamis City  (15 Minutes ETT). Check in to your accomodation.  Prepare some stuff you're going to bring when visiting MOAP.  Best time to go is in the morning!
      • In going to MOAP, ride a tricycle that leads to Lotradisco Jeepney Terminal near Gaisano Mall & from there, take a jeep with Sinacaban, Jimenez or Oroquieta Signboards. These routes passes MOAP. You can even tell the jeepney conductor to drop you at MOAP.
    • By Ship/Vessel - Get a ticket for Ozamis City at Superferry ticketting offices or any available shiplines. Travel Time would be longer compared to air transport.  (3 Days & 2 Nights)
      • Via Ozamis City Port - Ride a Tricycle or a Tri-Sikad that'll take you to your accomodation. Prepare for your departure to MOAP.  Ride a Tricycle that'll take you to Lotradisco Jeepney Terminal near Gaisano Mall.  From there,  take a jeep with Sinacaban, Jimenez or Oroquieta Signboards.  These routes passes MOAP.

    Sinacaban, Misamis Occidental (Part I)

    Sinacaban, Misamis Occidental, Philippines

     OUR TRIP TO SINACABAN
Sinacaban is one among the Misamis Occidental towns in Mindanao, Philippines & has been a memorable place to me.  You know why? It is because I consider this place as my home too. My family actually owns a  vacation house there, cleaned & maintained by an uncle & an aunt. In there, I had lots of fun things worth remembering during my childhood days.  When I was younger, I used to live there & visit cousins who settled there with their families. I love the forests where we used to go, the big water irrigation where we used to swim, the fresh air, the trees where we used to climb, the beaches, the streams, the deepwell, the food, the life & the people.
So, in 2009 summer time, together with some family members, I decided to go back.  Firstly, for a vacation & secondly, to celebrate my nth (secret) birthday.  We took the Cebu Pacific - 5J flight from Manila to Dipolog airport.  From there, we took a private van that drove us back to our old house in Sinacaban town. After so many years, I was back stepping on its land again.

The air was so different even though it was kinda warm  that day. I could even smell the strange but very familiar & scentful aroma coming from the ricefields.  The playground was grassy & green . The house was older.

    About Sinacaban
